Thermosetting resin composite materials refers to thermosetting resins such as unsaturated polyester resin, epoxy resin, phenolic resin, vinyl ester resin as matrix, glass fiber, carbon fiber, aramid fiber and UHMWPE fiber reinforced composite material. Epoxy resin is characterized by excellent chemical stability, electrical insulation, corrosion resistance, good adhesion and high mechanical strength. It is widely used in chemical, light industry, machinery, electronics, water conservancy, transportation, automobile, household appliances and aerospace etc.
In 1993, the world’s epoxy resin production capacity was 1 million 300 thousand tons, increased to 1 million 430 thousand tons in 1996, 1 million 480 thousand tons in 1997, 1 million 500 thousand tons in 1999, and 1 million 800 thousand tons in 2003. China began to study epoxy resin in 1975. According to incomplete statistics, there are about more than 170 epoxy resin production enterprises in China. The total production capacity is about 500000 tons, and the utilization rate of equipment is about 80%. Phenolic resin has many advantages, such as heat resistance, abrasion resistance, high mechanical strength, excellent electrical insulation, low smoke and acid resistance. Therefore, phenolic resin has been widely applied in various fields of composite industry. In 1997, the output of the global phenolic resin was 3 million tons, of which 1 million 640 thousand tons in the United States. The output of our country is 180 thousand tons, and the import is 40 thousand tons.
Vinyl ester resin is a new kind of thermosetting resin developed in 1960s, which is characterized by good corrosion resistance, solvent resistance, high mechanical strength, high elongation, and bonding properties of metal, plastic, concrete and other materials, good fatigue resistance, good electrical properties, heat aging, low shrinkage curing, can be cured at room temperature or heating curing.
